Being involved in renovating one of Chicago’s most iconic buildings, the historic Marshall Field’s Department Store and what is the current Macy’s flagship store in the loop to offer 650,000 square feet of premier office space, as well as first in class amenities and rooftop deck with expansive views of Lake Michigan, has been a privilege. All Burnham Buildings require the level of finesse that Brookfield brings to all their retrofits. The things that make this building so iconic, such as the vaulted Tiffany ceiling, are the things that require the most careful consideration from Cerami’s acoustic engineers. When you add a fitness center to a building that is well over 125 years old, and is a National Historic Landmark, controlling impact from fitness activities relies on careful coordination of programming and isolated flooring systems to successfully provide functionality in the building.

Signature Solution: The top floors, eight through fourteen, were remediated from their historic condition and transformed into white space for office build-outs. White space doesn’t mean white noise. There was a desire to retain a historic feeling and stately elegance in everything, including the acoustics.

As the official acoustic and audiovisual designers of the lavish multi-year renovation of Tiffany and Co.’s Fifth Avenue flagship store, we continue to monitor the construction vibration on the iconic New York City block, including the adjacent high-profile Trump Tower. Bringing in the most sophisticated monitoring system, with the sensitivity to distinguish between construction, environmental and office noise, was necessary for our discerning client. Construction started in 2019 and Cerami has been assessing the vibrational impact on a minute-by-minute basis.

Given the task of honoring Tiffany’s 183-year legacy, while helping to reimagine this luxury space, Cerami has been reviewing the interior to make certain that the store maintains the original acoustic integrity with the same benchmark quality as millions have loved throughout the decades and where so many memories have been made in the double-height box ceiling selling floor.

Signature Solution: Cerami is helping the storied company tell it’s story, acoustically and through a redesigned sound system throughout the new exhibition, event and ‘clientelling’ space with experiential moments, projecting an evolving brand.

Eataly is an upscale Italian marketplace that brings together a variety of high-quality food and beverage stalls, restaurants, and retail. Cerami was engaged as the technology, audiovisual, physical security and acoustical consultant for multiple Eataly locations in major cities across the U.S.

The Italian food retailer’s new locations include 40,000 square feet in New York City at 4 World Trade, 50,000 square feet at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles, and a 42,500 square foot Boston location.

Signature Solution: From its recycling efforts throughout its stores and application of The Aqualoop System, Eataly has fully embraced its zero waste policy. Cerami helped boost their sustainability initiative by providing green technology and sustainable acoustical design, helping their stores achieve LEED certifications.

Each retail location includes a grocery market, wine shop, café, restaurants, storage area, and other back of house areas. The facilities feature an integrated building technology platform to monitor and control multiple building systems (shades, lighting, heating and cooling, AV systems, and refrigeration equipment) with the use of Crestron Fusion, and ubiquitous Wi-Fi for production and guest access.

Trends in automotive retail are increasingly turning toward spaces focused on the consumer experience and visual branding, so in Genesis’ 40,000 square foot space right off Manhattan’s Auto Row guests are treated to a show curated by Cerami’s technology and acoustic design team.

Cerami’s involvement included an array of various technologies: theatre quality audio systems, LED video walls, AV systems in meeting rooms and other ancillary spaces, as well as a unique, 10’ long “flip disc” kinetic display. Despite all the hard surfaces, the feel is comfortable and inviting through strategic selection and placement of acoustical finishes. And dramatic, especially when enveloped by a massive video wall, which Cerami designed to give New Yorkers the feeling of an open road.

The showroom also provides a place of social interaction at their in-house restaurant and tea pavilion, where acoustical finishes mesh with the architectural feel of the space. Cerami’s acoustical team closely analyzed these specialty spaces to ensure the showroom below would not be impacted.

Signature Solution: The basement event space is a 43’x33’ stage area with video walls on the rear wall as well as the ceiling and floor. Designed to support a variety of functions, the stage will host event such as fashion shows, film screening, TED talks, while the drivable LED stage floor even allows for dramatic Genesis model reveals.
