Elevator noise is the cause of much consternation these days as more people work from home and those who are at emptier offices are more aware of surrounding sound. We are often called in to reduce the noise and vibration impact on the surrounding apartments and offices (these days, often one and the same). Usually when a call comes into Cerami’s Site Assessments team, it begins with “the noise from the elevator is driving me nuts”. And we get it.

Signature Solution: In general, we review measured noise and vibration test results and compare to the applicable NYC Noise Code Limits. One project in particular showed that the night time limit was greater than 7 dB, which violated code as it was deemed “unreasonable noise … that disturbs the peace, quiet or repose of a reasonable person of normal sensitivities…”.  In that case, we developed noise control design concepts after observing the steady state noise. You probably don’t want to hear about those pipe risers and how they were hitting the floor slabs each time the elevator was called into action. What you do want to hear about is with the right barrier material and decoupling it with a layer of fiberglass in between, the building is now quieted down (and up!).

Cerami was chosen to provide acoustical, audiovisual, IT, and security consulting services for ACE Hotel’s location in Downtown Brooklyn at 30 Bond Street. The new 13-story hotel development consists of 288 keys, conference spaces, and restaurant and retail facilities. Our team surveyed the existing site to measure the prevailing noise levels within and around the site, and liaised with the local authorities to establish building code requirements. Cerami developed architectural acoustical design criteria to ensure a comfortable and private stay for all hotel guests.

Cerami’s team also did the audiovisual fit-out for the new hotel. This fit-out consisted of a building-wide distributed audio system for “House” music to all public areas and a high-quality sound system with temporary DJ input location in the Bar Hall. It also includes high-definition projection and wall mounted display technology with multiple localized input systems for a large divisible event space and meeting rooms, an audio presentation and speech reinforcement system, digital signage, and assistance with an in room “On Screen” entertainment system.

Our team conducted interviews with the project team and client to establish the nature and extent of the IT infrastructure standards. Additionally, we developed security requirements that will address an Access Control and Alarm Monitoring System, a Video Surveillance System, an Intrusion Detection System, Security Desks/Rooms, and infrastructure requirements.

Signature Solution: Cerami’s technology team combined Internet Access, point-of-sale, entertainment, and access control networks for a seamless and unified guest experience.

Cerami was chosen to provide audiovisual and acoustical consulting services for the Montreign Resort Casino located in New York’s Catskills region. This 18-story casino, hotel, and entertainment complex features a casino with 61 table games and 2,150 state-of-the-art slot machines, 391 luxury hotel rooms, and multiple dining and entertainment options. And they weren’t gambling on the technology or the acoustic vibe.

Our team confirmed acoustical design criteria for the M Centre, meeting rooms, pool area, offices, room to room noise transfer, pool to room noise transfer, and the Salon Prives. For all spaces, Cerami ensured all background noise levels were kept to a minimum, partitions maintain acoustical separation between spaces, the floor slabs and finishes control impact noise transmission between vertically adjoining spaces, and that speech privacy potential is maintained. When you also call your casino an “indoor water park”, acoustic isolation is key for everyone’s enjoyment.

Our technology team was responsible for all AV technology throughout the hotel and all of its amenities, gaming, and other spaces. We developed a tailored guest experience including reservation systems, wayfinding and digital signage, and in-room technology solutions.

Signature Solution: With four separate entertainment spaces spread out in the resort, including the Empire Lounge, Sportsbook 360, Doubletop Bar and Grill and the Epicenter, where headliners perform, Cerami designed the acoustic treatment inside these performance spaces with just enough spillover to attract guests. Once inside these mostly open venues, the sound demonstrates their talent in the best possible way.

Imagine being the acoustic consultants on the iconic Eero Saarinen-designed TWA Hotel at New York City’s JFK Airport, with active runways facing the 512-room hotel and the steady roar of jet engines. You think that would keep us up at night? Wrong!

After testing multiple curtain wall options, we landed on a glass curtain wall by Fabbrica — the second thickest in the world after the wall at the U.S. Embassy in London — that is seven panes and 4-½-inches thick. The glass Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating of 45 ensures the floor-to-ceiling, full-width windows reduce runway noise. This, along with specialty guestroom construction and attention to details such as acoustic treatment to the rooftop pool and the rooftop co-generation plant that powers the site, is believed to rank the TWA Hotel amongst the quietest in the world.

This project was extra special to us for another reason. Cerami was founded around the same time of the original TWA terminal – 1965.

Signature Solution: Laboratory testing of many multi-pane windows assured the signature ambiance our design partners were seeking to create. Sophisticated acoustic modeling and simulation was done in Cerami’s Immersive Studio to enable the design team to experience a guestroom during jet take-off.
