Cerami & Associates is currently providing acoustical, audiovisual, IT, and security consulting for the new P.S. 59 on East 57th Street and Second Avenue. The building’s façade will feature sleek, clean-lined layers of windows that frame different classrooms, and a 3,000-square-foot gated plaza where elementary kids can gather and queue. The design focuses on light, space and creating an environment to nurture students.
The building will eventually house two separate schools, a lower school, a high school, a Whole Foods on the lower level, and a residential tower. The elementary and high school are completely separate, sharing only the 500-seat auditorium, which will be fit-out with a high tech sound system.
When it opens, P.S. 59 will have seats for 730 students, up from the 500 it currently serves at its temporary location at 250 East 63rd Street. The High School of Art and Design will house 1,400.
