A complex of mixed-use retail and residential buildings, Phase I of the Pentagon Row facility consists of four separate buildings erected directly west of the Pentagon City Mall in Arlington, VA. Parking is provided at two levels below grade with retail at the ground floor. The remaining four –five floors in each building consist of apartments and associated amenity areas. To assess the impact of traffic noise from nearby I-395 on the residential spaces, a noise survey was conducted and various glazing systems were considered.
In a mixed-use development, additional noise control is often required to meet the more stringent noise ordinance for residential units. At Pentagon Row, equipment such as cooling towers and pumps require additional screening and sound attenuation to reduce noise levels at the closest residences.
The buildings were erected with a mixed construction: concrete and steel were used for the parking and retail levels while a wood construction was used for the residential floors. This required differing types of noise control techniques for each space. Details for the residential demising wall and floor/ceiling constructions were carefully considered to reduce noise and footfall transmission between residential spaces.
