Projects / Sports & Recreation

The University Center is the centerpiece of NOVA Southeastern University’s campus, featuring a student union, fitness center, performing arts theater, and sports arena. Cerami & Associates was asked to be the audiovisual consultant and transform it into a state-of-the-art multi-use facility.

The focus of this project was the biggest room in the building: the arena. A venue for large events like NCAA Division II basketball games, graduations, and banquets, the arena presented a challenge in terms of designing the right audiovisual system that would be able to accommodate so many different functions in such a large space, in addition to an operable wall system that divides the arena into three sections, with each one requiring independent audio capability. Our solution was to install 10 floating speakers in the center of the arena, 8 floating speakers in each of the two side sections, and a single DSP (digital audio signal processor) that varies the speaker levels, delay, and equalization of the sound depending on the “mode” of the arena. This system has the ability to accommodate the full spectrum of room configurations, and still manages to deliver clear, intelligible sound to all of the seats with localization appropriate to the origin of the event.

It is also important that these audiovisual technologies make sense acoustically, so our acoustical team ensured that the noises from the arena would only be heard inside the arena, and that, when divided into separate rooms, the sounds wouldn’t carry to the adjacent rooms where coinciding events may occur.
