Cerami & Associates was hired to provide base building acoustical and vibration services for the Cira Centre project in Philadelphia. There were many acoustical challenges with this project, due to its location between train tracks as well as storage and refueling tracks. There were also elevated freight train lines farther to the west and the elevated SEPTA suburban commuter train lines to the south of the site. Finally, there is the heavy traffic on Arch Street that passes by the site on an elevated roadbed.
The main concern was noise and vibration transmission into the new tower and the potential impact on the indoor environment. Cerami took a series of measurements of noise and vibration generated by train and motor vehicle traffic, and found that without proper acoustical treatments, occupants of this office building would be disrupted by the environmental noise. Cerami utilized these noise measurements in order to specify optimal floor layouts, and acoustical treatments to ensure a comfortable environment for all occupants.
